| The
fact is, nothing lasts forever. This certainly holds true
with regard to masonry chimneys.
There are many factors that determine the life span of a chimney
- some 50-year old chimneys are in better condition than some
5-year old chimneys
More
often than not, chimney damage beginswith a single crack,
usually
in the masonry crown at the very top. Once cracked, it
is only a matter of time before the entire chimney is in
need of restoration or complete rebuilding, usually from
the roof line up.
Once
water gets inside (absorbed in) the tile or ceramic chimney
shell, it stays there. When it freezes, the cracks multiply
and the brick and mortar loosen.

Did you know?
Its water - not
fire - that causes most chimney damage
Rain and the resulting
acid residue eat away at the composites, causing major structural
damage.
Loose bricks, corrosion
of mortar joints and rust are symptoms of serious deterioration.
