When you think of the shape and function of a chimney, you find that it is nothing more than a funnel for water if not properly protected· Smokes rises, so that is not a problem, but gravity pulls anything above it right down its chute!

The lack of a cap on your chimney will cause more damage than from any other source.

There is no better investment in preventative maintenance for your chimney system than to cap it.

Think about anything else of value to you. You don·t leave them exposed to the weather. Eventually they will become damaged, ruined, and non-functional. The same is true for your chimney and its integrated appliances - only it takes much longer, if ever, for a soaked masonry chimney to dry out.

What happens without a cap?

Rain will damage metal fireboxes and dampers. It will also erode mortar joints and cause unwelcome odors.
Animals love to build nests in chimneys. Squirrels and raccoons will crawl down and live in your fireplace and very frequently get into the house and cause damage. Birds build nests during the spring and summer and when it·s time to start a fire smoke instead of joy fills the room.
Sparks can ignite the roof especially when trees are close and are shedding their leaves or needles.

Caps also help your fire burn more effectively by alleviating many drafting problems.

The wind will actually enhance your chimney’s drafting properties by blowing across the top of the capped flue, whereas it will blow down an open chimney flue and billow smoke into the house.

Every Chimney should be protected with a cap!!!

Caps range from $125.00 for the standard 8x8 single flue up to $500.00 for a multi-flue 17 x 49 model.
